September is Suicide Prevention Month, dedicated to opening up the conversation around suicide, how to spot the signs, and how you can help.
The most recently released data from the Office for National Statistics reports that in 2024, there were 6,190 deaths by suicide registered in the UK, and Samaritans reports volunteers responded to a call for help every 10 seconds.
In our industry, we are no strangers to challenges; demands on our mental and emotional well-being can be substantial. Historically, engaging with emotional distress is something we have often learnt to shy away from. We will ensure physical safety on job sites but wilfully overlook the signs that we, or someone we know. is struggling with mental health. We want to help change this.
Why It Matters:
Studies have shown that high-stress professions, like ours, can contribute to mental health struggles. The stigma around mental health often prevents many from seeking the help they need, and prevents those around us from feeling able to offer it. We believe that the first step to changing the culture is by talking about it, and the only way to facilitate this discussion is to hold a safe space for people to feel heard and cared for.
This can often be extremely challenging, as well as feeling overwhelming. A first step could be to speak with your GP, counsellor or or reach out to one of the services and helplines we have listed below.
