Adventure and Fundraising Triumph: A Journey Across Europe

Embarking on a journey that spanned 3000 miles across 11 countries in just 7 days, the team behind “Donut Patrol”, Jamie Yates and his life long friend Greg, set out on an adventure that was as ambitious as it was selfless. Their mission was to raise funds for the Electrical Industries Charity (EIC), and they did so in a way that was both creative and memorable.

The foundation of their journey was a Vauxhall Omega V6 from the year 2000—a vehicle that, at first glance, might have seemed like an old banger. However, with a bit of effort, resourcefulness, and no small amount of ingenuity, the team transformed this humble car into their rally vehicle of choice. The Omega, now reimagined and ready for the challenge, would carry them across the continent as they navigated diverse landscapes and cultural crossroads.

The trip was anything but smooth sailing. The car behaved admirably for the most part, but there was a tense moment when it slipped into Limp home mode, limiting their speed to a mere 5 mph while passing through Stuttgart. This minor setback, however, was just one of the many hurdles they overcame with grit and determination, proving that the real strength of “Donut Patrol” lay not in their vehicle but in their resilience.

Throughout their journey, the team encountered some of the most stunning scenery Europe has to offer, making brief but impactful stops along the way, including a fleeting visit to Dorbirn. These experiences were enriched by interactions with friendly locals and supportive police officers, who added warmth and security to their adventure.

Despite the challenges they faced, “Donut Patrol” succeeded in their mission, raising over £800 for EIC. This remarkable achievement was not just a testament to their driving skills, but also to the generosity of those who supported their cause. Each mile they covered and every person they met, contributed to a greater goal—making a real difference in the lives of individuals within the electrical industry.

Looking back, what stands out the most is the spirit of companionship and the sense of purpose that fueled their journey. It wasn’t just about the thrill of the ride or the miles covered; it was about coming together to support a worthy cause and demonstrating that with determination and a bit of ingenuity, even the most unlikely of vehicles can become a vessel for change.

As the team members of “Donut Patrol” return to their daily lives, they do so with the satisfaction of knowing that their adventure across Europe was more than just an exciting trip. It was a powerful statement of compassion and community, showing that when people unite for a cause, they can drive far beyond their expectations and towards a better future for others.

Ross Hyslop, one of our regular Wellbeing Talk Host, recently took on the Three Peaks 24 Hour Challenge. Here, in his own words, what it was like:

Hiking, long-distance walking and mountaineering is more than a hobby to me. I found my love of walking when I began my journey of sobriety, over 30 years ago. The serenity I experience by being as far off the beaten track as possible, immersed in nature, gives me the strength to manage the stress of daily life. Taking on the three peaks felt like an easy decision. The team that and I completed it are all avid hikers, and we share the benefits of such activities for their emotional well-being. The most daunting aspect of it for me was the lack of sleep I don’t do well between the hours of 23:00-06:00.

Completing the 3 peak challenge is a remarkable achievement in 24 hours but to be part of a team where 3 of the group came in under 20 hours was just incredible and definitely spurred me on to achieve a sub-21 hour completion time! Scaling the highest peaks of Scotland (Ben Nevis), England (Scafell Pike), and Wales (Snowdon) in a short timeframe requires physical endurance, mental strength, and determination – all of which would not have been possible without the team.

It highlighted the importance of working together to conquer the mountains, whilst having a sense of teamwork, cooperation, and camaraderie. It gave each of us the opportunity to explore the natural beauty of the mountains, appreciate breathtaking views, and connect with nature as well as raising money for a worthy cause. It’s an adventure-filled journey that has left us with unforgettable memories. Overall, the challenge allowed us to boost our mental wellbeing and most importantly, raise awareness about the Electrical Industries Charity.

I have seen, firsthand, the impact the EIC have on all their service users, and the model they work within is very much aligned with my own internal compass, so setting off to raise some money for the work that the welfare team are doing was a privilege.

“The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.”

This week is Men’s Health Week, a critical time to emphasize the importance of mental health awareness among men. Despite increased awareness, many men still hesitate to talk about their mental health struggles. At the Electrical Industries Charity, we strive to illuminate the various factors that affect mental well-being, both positively and negatively. To start, we will explore what mental health and well-being truly mean.

What is Mental Health?

According to the World Health Organisation, “Mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realise their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community. It is an integral component of health and well-being that underpins our individual and collective abilities to make decisions, build relationships and shape the world we live in. Mental health is a basic human right. And it is crucial to personal, community and socio-economic development.

“Mental health is more than the absence of mental disorders. It exists on a complex continuum, which is experienced differently from one person to the next, with varying degrees of difficulty and distress and potentially very different social and clinical outcomes.”

Understanding Stress

Before discussing ways to improve mental wellbeing, it’s crucial to understand how stress impacts our lives and what resilience means.

What is Stress?

Stress is our reaction to perceived danger. It manifests in two forms:

  1. Chronic stress, which builds up over time from regular stressors like a heavy workload or noisy environment.
  2. Acute stress, resulting from sudden or unexpected events like a car accident or bereavement.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) identifies six management standards related to work-related stress:

  • Demands: Your workload and its challenges.
  • Control: How much control you have over your work.
  • Support: The help and training provided to do your job.
  • Role: Whether the job is suitable, desirable, and within your capability.
  • Relationships: How well you get along with colleagues and managers.
  • Change: How much notice you receive about changes and your agreement with them.

If these stressors resonate with you, consider discussing them with somebody. This could be your supervisor or manager at work, a friend or the electrical industries charity.

Recognising Excessive Stress

Excessive stress over prolonged periods can lead to fatigue, feeling overwhelmed and burnout, which negatively impact health. The threshold for excessive stress varies from person to person, so it’s vital to develop skills to manage and reduce stress.

What is Resilience?

Resilience is the ability to adapt and recover from stress. It involves alternating between stress (‘fight or flight’) and relaxation. Without adequate relaxation, we become mentally and physically exhausted.

Spotting Signs of Stress

Recognising stress in ourselves and others is the first step toward addressing it. Early recognition helps prevent the descent into severe mental health issues.

Optimising Mental Health

  1. Sleep

Nearly half of people report that poor sleep negatively impacts their mental health. Tips for better sleep include:

  • Establishing a pre-sleep routine without blue light exposure.
  • Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule.
  • Creating a conducive sleep environment.
  • Practicing mindfulness techniques if you struggle to fall asleep.
  1. Nutrition

Diet significantly affects mental health. Tips for better nutrition include:

  • Avoiding sugary and caffeinated drinks.
  • Eating a healthy breakfast with protein.
  • Replacing unhealthy snacks with nutritious options.
  • Taking proper meal breaks and eating balanced meals.
  1. Physical Activity

Exercise boosts mental health and mood. Tips for staying active include:

  • Incorporating regular exercise, like gym workouts or yoga.
  • Moving around throughout the day, especially if you have a sedentary job.
  • Taking mental breaks to improve mood and reduce eye strain.
  1. Work/Life Balance

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial. Tips include:

  • Unplugging from work outside work hours.
  • Engaging in social activities and exercise.
  • Organising tasks by priority to manage workload effectively.
  • Discussing work-life balance concerns with your employer or HR.
  1. Financial Health

Financial stress significantly impacts mental health. Tips for managing finances include:

  • Creating and adhering to a budget.
  • Identifying areas to save money.
  • Managing debt through repayment plans.
  • Building a savings fund for unexpected expenses.
  1. Relaxation

Relaxation techniques help reduce stress and build resilience. These include:

  • Deep breathing exercises.
  • Grounding practices.
  • Positive thinking and visualisation.
  • Meditation and massage.
  • Laughter and trying new activities.
  • Setting achievable goals and connecting with others.
  • Taking breaks and asking for help when needed.

Celebrating Pride: Cultivating Inclusion and Diversity in the Workplace

As the vibrant colours of the Pride flag soar across cities globally, they bring with them a powerful message of love, equality and acceptance. Pride Month is not only a celebration but also a testament to the ongoing journey towards inclusivity and respect for the LGBTQIA+ community. In this spirit, workplaces hold a crucial role in fostering an environment that champions diversity and allows everyone to thrive with authenticity.

The Colours of Diversity

Diversity is an invaluable asset to any workplace. An inclusive environment that respects diverse sexual orientations and gender identities enhances creativity, innovation and problem-solving, driving organisational success. When employees feel valued and respected for who they are, they are more likely to contribute their unique perspectives and ideas, leading to richer collaboration and innovation.

Strategies for Promoting Inclusion

To cultivate a workplace that celebrates Pride not just in a particular month but throughout the year, consider the following strategies:

  1. Promote Awareness:
Hold workshops, seminars or discussions that educate employees about LGBTQIA+ histories, struggles and contributions. These educational initiatives can help foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as their achievements and contributions.
  2. Support Employee Resource Groups (ERGs):
Encourage and support the formation of ERGs where LGBTQIA+ employees and allies can connect, share and support each other. These groups provide a safe space for members to discuss issues, share resources and advocate for necessary changes within the organization.
  3. Implement Non-Discrimination Policies:
Ensure that company policies explicitly prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. These policies should be clearly communicated to all employees and integrated into the company’s core values and practices.
  4. Encourage Allyship:
Foster a culture where all employees feel encouraged to stand as allies, promoting empathy and understanding. Allies can play a crucial role in supporting LGBTQIA+ colleagues by advocating for their rights and creating a more inclusive workplace environment.
  5. Celebrate Pride:
Participate in Pride events as an organisation, whether it’s hosting an event, joining a parade or collaborating with LGBTQIA+ charities and organisations. These activities not only show support but also build a sense of community and solidarity.
  6. Flexible Benefits:
Tailor benefits to be inclusive, considering the diverse needs of the LGBTQIA+ community, such as healthcare provisions that cover same-sex partners or transgender health services. Offering inclusive benefits demonstrates the organisation’s commitment to supporting the well-being of all employees.

Continuous Commitment

Promoting inclusivity should be a continuous commitment, not confined to a single month. Constantly evaluate, update and improve policies and practices to ensure they align with the values of equality and respect. This ongoing effort signals to employees that the organisation is genuinely dedicated to creating an inclusive environment.

Building a Legacy of Inclusion

Through active effort and genuine commitment, organisations can become pillars supporting the LGBTQIA+ community, building a legacy marked by inclusion, respect and equality. This legacy is not only about the policies and events but also about the everyday interactions that shape the organizational culture.

Celebrating Pride in the workplace is a vibrant affirmation of the organisation’s commitment to diversity, equality and respect for all. As we adorn our workplaces with the radiant colours of Pride, let’s ensure that these colours illuminate our organisational cultures, policies and everyday interactions, fostering a workplace where everyone is empowered to shine with authenticity. By doing so, we not only support our LGBTQIA+ colleagues but also build a stronger, more innovative, and cohesive organisation.

The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge: A One-Day Test of Endurance in Spectacular Scenery.

The Yorkshire Three Peaks, nestled within the breathtaking Yorkshire Dales, presents a formidable challenge for even the most avid walkers. Scaling three mountains in one day is no small feat, promising an exhilarating and demanding trek through some of England’s most stunning countryside. Shaped by glaciers thousands of years ago, this region boasts geological marvels such as striking limestone outcrops and unusual rock formations, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts. Along the route, trekkers are treated to the iconic sight of the Ribblehead Viaduct, part of the scenic Settle to Carlisle railway line.

This challenge spans a tough but rewarding day in steep, rugged country, offering an unforgettable sense of achievement. And the best part? There’s still time to sign up! Whether you’re an experienced hiker or looking for a new adventure, don’t miss this chance to push your limits and experience the natural beauty of the Yorkshire Dales like never before. Secure your spot today and embark on a journey that will test your endurance, reward your efforts, and leave you with memories to last a lifetime.

What’s in store for you on the Day?

Meeting in the morning, between 6 and 7am the start point is near the village of Horton in Ribblesdale. You will then set off on the Pennine Way towards our first peak: the distinctive stepped outcrop of Pen-y-Ghent. As we gain height, you will get the chance to enjoy views across to our remaining two peaks, Whernside and Ingleborough. Clear, well-worn paths and stone steps take us quite steeply up to the summit (694m). The ascent is challenging but rewarding, with panoramic vistas that set the tone for the rest of the journey.

Descending from Pen-y-Ghent, your path runs parallel with the Settle to Carlisle railway line, leading us towards Ribblehead. At this point you will see the high, rounded peak of Whernside. The climb beigins gradually following a slabbed path all the way to the summit (736m). The last section is particularly steep, but your efforts will be rewarded (weather dependent!) with stunning views and the knowledge that we have only one summit left to conquer.

After descending from Whernside, there is only one more to go, Ingleborough (723m).  The stepped path zig-zags fairly steadily to the summit of our final peak. The climb is demanding, but reaching the summit will offer a triumphant sense of accomplishment. With more amazing views over Simon Fell briefly before heading back down and towards the finish line.

Our trek concludes with a celebratory gathering near Horton in Ribblesdale, where we share our experiences and revel in our achievements before saying our farewells and heading home at approximately 7pm. Covering approximately 24 miles over the course of 10-12 hours, this epic challenge not only tests your physical endurance but also immerses you in some of England’s most spectacular natural beauty.

So, lace up your hiking boots and prepare to tackle the Yorkshire Three Peaks – a true testament to your stamina and spirit. And the best part? There’s still time to sign up and be part of this incredible adventure.
