Gloucestershire Area Golf Competition 2016

Gloucestershire Branch’s golf competition was held at Cheltenham’s Lilley Brook Golf Club on 16th June. During the previous weekend violent storms had flooded the course together with the Professional’s shop; the grounds staff had undertaken sterling work to get everything ready for the following Thursday. 

Twenty six teams took part from 17 supporting organisations. The day was rounded off with a delightful dinner followed by prize giving and a raffle.

 Tony Mills, Chairman of the organising team, led the international field away (players from Scotland, Wales, France and Germany joined this year!) partnered by guest, Andy Waldis, and Club Captain, Taras Ciuriak. However, shortly after, the heavens opened and play had to be suspended as parts of the course quickly became unplayable. The rain ceased an hour later and grounds staff (who had left earlier) were called back in and worked furiously to get the course playable again. Play recommenced after a two hour break with the competition reduced to 12 holes. The sun made an appearance during the afternoon and play completed without any further stoppages. Indeed, some teams carried on to complete 18 holes and still got themselves ready in time for dinner!

James Marshall of EDF Energy won the main stableford competition with 26 points. James was presented with the Gloucester Electric Cup by Paul Bates of sponsors Cavendish Nuclear. Rob Gillespie won best scratch with a score of 50 for his 12 holes. The Corporate Risk Associates team of Gerry Robertson, Mark Oldale and Sid McFarlane won best team score.  

EDF Energy was again the organiser and major sponsor of the Gloucestershire golf. In addition, Atkins, Cavendish Nuclear and Doosan Babcock provided major sponsorship. Tessa Ogle, MD of the EIC, took the opportunity after dinner to present awards to these four key sponsors to recognise their constant support over a number of years. Also in her speech, Tessa gave examples of how the Charity has helped members of our industry and their families who had endured exceptional difficulties.

A number of companies kindly sponsored holes and provided prizes for a raffle.

The Gloucestershire branch would like to thank all the sponsors, players, and Lilley Brook Golf Club for their continued support of this popular event. It is expected that it will have raised around £30,000 for the Electrical Industries Charity.
