Richard Scott: Driving Awareness and Action Across Our Industry

As Richard Scott steps into his new role as a trustee of the Electrical Industries Charity, he brings with him the energy, insight and determination that have defined his time on the Emerging Professionals Board since November 2023. Already a key member of the fundraising committee and Kosnic’s dedicated EIC Champion, Richard has become one of the Charity’s most active and engaged volunteers, using both personal experience and industry knowledge to push for greater awareness and stronger support across the sector.

Where the Journey Began

Richard first came across the EIC through LinkedIn and at industry events, including the EDA summer conference. But it was a conversation at powerBall that moved him from curiosity to action. “After powerBall, I picked up the phone on Monday and got stuck in. I was at the next EP Board meeting without hesitation.” That willingness to jump in has shaped his involvement ever since.

For Richard, this work is personal. Early in his electrical industry career, he and his wife Caroline tragically experienced the stillbirth of their child. At the time, they had no idea the EIC existed or that support could have been available to them. The experience became a defining motivation. “If we didn’t know about the EIC, how many others do not either. That is what drives me. People need to know that help is there.”

Reaching the Industry Where it is

That sense of purpose underpins his focus on contractor engagement. Richard believes strongly that the EIC’s presence must reach the places where the industry actually meets and works. “We need a presence at every trade counter. There are circa two thousand across the country and every one is a daily touchpoint for contractors, suppliers and wholesalers. If I walk into one and there is no EIC material, I will hand them some myself.”

Richard has already begun building practical pathways to make that happen. He is connecting the EIC with wholesalers, pushing for digital screens and branded materials in branches and encouraging joint visibility between suppliers, contractors and manufacturers. His ambition is clear. He wants the EIC to be visible, understood and accessible at every level of the sector.

Leading by Example

Alongside this work, Richard has helped grow Kosnic’s involvement with the Charity. From sponsoring his daughter’s football team with Kosnic and EIC branding to leading Team Kosnic in major fundraising challenges, he has embedded support for the Charity into the company’s culture.

One of Richard’s standout achievements as a volunteer has been leading Team Kosnic in the Thames Path Join Jess Challenge, where the team raised almost £5,000 for the Charity. It was a milestone that strengthened Kosnic’s relationship with the EIC and proved how much impact a committed team can have. Richard is already looking ahead to next year’s Snowdon by Night Challenge for a Cause, aiming not only to match that total but to beat it. For him, these challenges are about more than fundraising; they are a way of bringing people together, growing awareness and showing what the industry can achieve when it pulls in the same direction. As he puts it, “It is about time, presence and commitment.”

Shaping the EIC’s Next Chapter

Looking ahead, Richard is eager to play a strategic role in shaping how the EIC reaches new audiences. He is especially focused on working with industry peers, to build targeted contractor campaigns and drive long term fundraising growth. “The EIC is already an incredible force for good. With greater awareness across contractors, it has the potential to become a real cornerstone of support for our industry.” His plans extend beyond fundraising, he sees partnership and shared visibility as key to ensuring the Charity continues to grow and adapt.

Richard approaches this new trustee role with enthusiasm and humility. He is keen to understand the Board’s structure, the strategic decisions behind the scenes and where his own strengths can support future progress. “I am excited to get into the role, soak it up and see what everyone brings to the table. I want to understand how it all works and where I can add my own stamp to help move things forward.”

“Do it. Do it now.”

His advice to anyone thinking about getting involved with the EIC is simple. “Do it. Do it now. And do as much as your time allows.”

Richard’s drive, perspective and commitment make him a valuable addition to the Board. As the Charity celebrates supporting the industry for 120 years, he joins at a pivotal time with a clear vision: raise awareness, strengthen support and make sure every corner of the industry knows the EIC is here to help. —find out about the ways you can make a difference.
