We’ve put together a collection of the best deals for saving on back-to-school supplies, as well as some tips and tricks to help reduce financial stress on the family.
Discounts and Price Freezes
Tesco is holding 2024 prices of any uniform items sold last year, and this year you can even bypass the crowds by shopping for uniforms online. That means you can place your order from the beach or your garden and get back to enjoying the summer fun!
Sainsburys have also locked their uniform prices for the third year in a row, and stock uniform items from the Tu clothing range from as little as £3. You could get two pairs of trousers, two polo shirts, and two sweatshirts for just £14. Keep an eye out for their clothing sales, which usually offer 20-25% off and in the past have taken place in February, April, May, August, September and October.
H&M:
H&M Kids stock everything from polos to school dresses, and often at very affordable prices. The great news for parents of older kids is that H&M’s clothing prices do not change based on size, so the price you see is the price you get.
Tips and Tricks
- Create an Inventory: Perhaps your wee ones haven’t quite grown out of some of their uniform items from last term? Ask yourself if you need to buy everything at once, prioritise the things they absolutely can’t go without, and scout out for good deals for everything else. This also helps you spreads the cost out, making less of a dent in your wallet when compared with buying everything all at once.
- Get Thrifty: Visiting local charity shops can be a good way to find deals on second hand clothing. We recommend visiting a charity shop that is close to your child’s school to increase the likelihood of finding the correct uniform items.
- Scope Out Deals Online: Browsing eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and Vinted can be a good way to score some great deals on second hand clothing. You can also visit Uniformerly, an online marketplace specifically for school uniforms where parents, schools, and PTA’s can buy, sell, and donate hand-me-down school uniforms.
- Plan for Growth Spurts: They grow up so fast – it isn’t just a saying! If your child is still growing, we recommend buying those more expensive items such as blazers one to two sizes up so that they last longer.
- Name Tag Everything: Sometimes those growing young minds can be so focused on learning and play that other things can be easily forgotten or misplaced. If your wee one has a knack for losing their uniform items, it’s a good idea to ensure all their clothing has name tags on them. You can do this by using iron-on labels, sew-on labels, or by writing their name in marker on the tag.
