One of the many ways in which the Charity provides support is when somebody has to take time off work due to illness, placing them in a highly stressful situation both emotionally and financially. EIC were recently able to help Joshua, 28, an electrician from Bristol who was referred to the Charity by MacMillan Cancer Support. Joshua had been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, a rare form of cancer that affects the white blood cells and requires immediate treatment. He was undergoing chemotherapy and then underwent a bone marrow transplant. It had been estimated that following this he would be off work and recovering for around nine months.

Although he was initially on full pay, this was due to reduce drastically and he would only be on benefits thereafter. Joshua had a mortgage on a house purchased only two years previously, which he was very worried about. After working so hard to be able to afford his house he didn’t want to get into difficulties with paying his mortgage and end up losing it. At this early stage in his mortgage the repayment was almost entirely made up of interest which he could not manage on his benefits. EIC were able to cover the interest payments of £750 per month until he was back at work.

This financial cushion came as a huge relief to Joshua as it meant that he no longer had to worry about his mortgage and could concentrate on his recovery – which proved to be pretty spectacular! Instead of the estimated six to nine months, he was back at work full-time in March 2018 – just five months after the bone marrow transplant. He has continued to work full-time since, with just a minor blip recently with a virus that resulted in some hospital time.
